THE CENTRAL IDEA Soaked, then stinking, then salt-stained, then cracked. Most sites treat these as four unrelated topics. They are one chain and it always runs in that order: 1. Nikwax specifies clean, WET footwear from 6 inches, excess removed after a 2-minute dwell. Grangers specifies freshly cleaned and damp. Atsko specifies clean, DRY, preheated boots for Sno-Seal. - The 120 F ceiling: Atsko publishes a maximum comfortable handling temperature of 120 F when preheating boots for Sno-Seal. Beeswax melts around 146 F, which tempts people into more heat than the leather can survive. - Sno-Seal is not for suede - Atsko states it will darken the material and flatten the nap. - No manufacturer publishes a reproofing interval in wears. Use the beading test: water beading tightly on a clean toe means the treatment is working; water darkening the material where it lands means it is gone. Flex creases and the welt fail before the toe cap does.
