Dryers vs deodorizers for boot smell

A deodorizer treats the output. A dryer removes the input. We publish this on a page that earns from both, because the arithmetic is not close.

If the boots are damp between wears, buy a dryer. If they are dry and still smell, buy a deodorizer. That is the split, and for most people with a smell problem the honest answer is the first one - which is inconvenient for us, because deodorizers are the cheaper impulse purchase and we earn on both.

The two products are not doing the same job

Foot odor is bacteria on the skin feeding on sweat, thriving in warmth, darkness and moisture. Of those four conditions - skin, sweat, darkness, moisture - moisture is the only one you can control between wears. A boot dryer removes it. A deodorizer does not touch it; it treats what the bacteria have already produced, or adds a scent on top.

The formula is watts ÷ 1000 × hours × $/kWh, using the EIA average residential rate of 18.34 cents per kilowatt-hour that we use across this site.

A 36-watt convection dryer running 8 hours a night: 36 ÷ 1000 × 8 × 0.1834 = about 5.3 cents a night. Over a 90-night season that is about $4.75 of electricity. That is the entire ongoing cost of removing the condition the bacteria depend on, every night, all winter.

When the deodorizer is genuinely the right buy

Three cases, and they are real:

  • The boots are already dry and still smell. The bacteria are established in the lining. Removing moisture stops it getting worse but does not remove what is there - a carbon pad or a treatment does.
  • You cannot leave anything plugged in. Shared accommodation, a locker, a truck. A pad or powder needs no power and no space.
  • It is a gym bag, not a boot. Short-term storage of already-dry footwear is exactly what a scented insert is for.

The combination, if you want the complete answer

Dryer every night, insoles out, and a drying powder once or twice a week. The dryer stops the condition recurring, the removed insole gets air to the wettest part, and the powder handles what is already in the lining. Most people never need more than this.

Do boot dryers get rid of the smell?

Indirectly, and it is the most effective thing you can buy for the problem. Odor comes from bacteria feeding on sweat in a warm, damp, dark boot. A dryer removes the moisture, which is the one variable in that list you can control between wears.

Yes, and that is the complete answer for an established smell. Dry the boots, pull the insoles, and use a drying powder or carbon pad on what is already in the lining. Just do not spray a liquid into a boot before drying it.
