How to dry wet boots fast, without wrecking them
It is 9 pm, the boots are soaked, and you need them at six. Here is the fastest method that does not destroy the leather - and the three shortcuts that do.

The fastest safe method, in one paragraph: pull the insoles and the laces out, wipe the mud off before it dries, stuff the boots loosely with newspaper for the first hour and then throw that paper away, and put them somewhere with moving air at room temperature - in front of a fan, not a radiator. If you own a forced-air dryer, use it on the no-heat setting. With that routine a soaked pair of leather work boots will be wearable by morning, and still be wearable next year.
The three things that will ruin them
Every fast-drying shortcut people reach for is a heat source, and heat is the one thing leather cannot take. Atsko put it in a single sentence: “Force drying - especially with heat - will cause leather to harden and shrink. In a few cycles, the boots are trashed.” Blundstone’s care guide says “Never dry your boots by an open fire or artificial heat source, as this will cause the leather to harden, shrink and crack.”
- The radiator or wood stove. The worst option. It drives water out of the outer leather far faster than it comes out of the middle, so the surface shrinks around a still-wet core. That is the mechanism behind a cracked toe box.
- The tumble dryer. Heat plus mechanical tumbling plus glue. It is also loud enough that people do it once and never again. The longer answer, including what happens to the sole adhesive.
- The hair dryer on hot. Fine for two minutes on a damp patch, wrong for a soaked boot: it is a very small heat source aimed at one spot, so it does the radiator’s job faster and more locally.
Note the distinction, because it matters and gets muddled: the problem is heat, not airflow. A fan pointed into a boot for eight hours is completely safe and enormously effective. A purpose-made boot dryer caps its temperature - DryGuy publishes 105 °F for the Force Dry range - which is warm, not hot.
The procedure

Get the insoles and laces out
Thirty seconds, and it is the highest-value step here. The footbed holds more water than the boot shell does and dries in about a quarter of the time once it is out. Stand the insoles on their edge somewhere with air on both sides.

Wipe the mud off now, while it is wet
Dried mud has to be brushed off, and brushing dried mud off wet-dried leather scuffs it. A damp cloth now saves a job later. If the boots have been near a gritted road, this is also your one easy chance to get the salt off before it dries into a tideline.

Open them up as far as the lacing allows
Tongue forward, throat wide open. Air has to reach the toe box, and on a laced boot the toe box is at the end of a tunnel. This is the whole reason boot dryers are shaped the way they are.

One hour of newspaper, then bin it
Loosely crumpled paper pulls a genuinely useful amount of water out of the lining in the first hour by direct contact. After that it is saturated and it becomes a damp plug that slows everything down. Change it once or throw it away - the mistake is leaving the first lot in overnight.

Moving air, room temperature, all night
A fan on low pointed at the open throats will do it. A boot dryer does it better because the air goes into the boot rather than across it. Either way the target is airflow, not warmth.

In the morning, check the toe from the inside
Push your hand right down to the toe. Boots are dry at the ankle hours before they are dry at the toe, and a boot that feels dry at the top and is damp at the bottom is exactly the boot that starts to smell.
How long it should take
Atsko’s guidance for slow drying with minimal heat and good air circulation is two days for a thoroughly soaked boot and one day for a partially wet one. That is the conservative, leather-first answer, and it is the right one if you have a second pair.
If you do not, published dryer figures are the realistic path: PEET puts non-fan models at 4 to 8 hours or overnight, and fan-assisted models at 1 to 4 hours. Do not skip this bit
A boot that has been soaked has lost oils along with the water. Once it is dry, it wants conditioning - not because it looks dull, but because the fibers have stiffened and the next flex is what cracks them.
If this keeps happening
Boots that soak through in ordinary rain have lost their finish. Flick water onto the toe: if it darkens the leather instead of beading, the treatment has gone and re-proofing is the actual fix. Drying them faster is treating the symptom.
