Ozone and UV boot dryers
Sanitizing dryers sell a real mechanism against a real cause. What they do not sell is a published figure you can check, which is why we have not put one on the shortlist.

The premise is sound and the disclosure is not, so we are not ranking one. Ozone and UV-C both genuinely inactivate micro-organisms - that is not in dispute. What is in dispute, or rather simply absent, is any manufacturer figure that would let you judge one unit against another: ozone output, UV-C dose, exposure time to achieve it.
The mechanism, stated fairly
Boot odor is bacterial. The Cleveland Clinic describes it plainly - bacteria and fungi “love heat, moisture and darkness, and the inside of your shoe is the best place for that to happen” - and the smell is their acidic byproduct. Anything that reduces that population reduces the smell.
- Ozone (O₃) is a strong oxidizer that damages cell membranes. It is used industrially for exactly this. It also degrades rubber and some elastomers over time, and it is a respiratory irritant, which is why these units run on a timer with nobody in the room.
- UV-C damages microbial DNA. It works by line of sight only - it cannot bend around a footbed or into a seam - so the geometry of a boot is genuinely hostile to it.
What we cannot tell you, and will not guess
To compare two ozone dryers you would need the ozone concentration produced and the exposure time. To compare two UV units you would need the lamp’s output and the distance to the surface. We could not find those figures published by any manufacturer in this category, which puts them in the same position as the DryGuy wattage question elsewhere on this site: the number does not exist publicly, so we will not print one.
That is not an accusation. It is a straightforward reason why this page has no ranked list while every other roundup here does.
What we would buy instead
A plain dryer that removes the moisture, because moisture is the one variable in “heat, moisture and darkness” you can actually control between wears - and a drying powder for the foot rather than the boot. Together those cost less than a sanitizing unit and address the cause rather than the population.
If you are buying one anyway
Reasonable, and here is what to check rather than what to believe:
- Does it also actually dry? Some sanitizing units are deodorizers with a fan and no meaningful heat. A unit that sanitizes and leaves the boot damp has treated the symptom and preserved the cause.
- Is the ozone cycle timed and enclosed? Ozone should run on a timer, in an unoccupied space, and stop.
- What does it say about rubber? Ozone degrades many rubbers and elastomers. A manufacturer that addresses this in its own documentation is one that has thought about it.
- Does the warranty match the price? These sell at a premium. PEET publishes 25 years on a plain convection dryer; hold a sanitizing unit to a comparable standard.
The honest bottom line
If your boots smell, drying them properly is the highest-value change and it is cheap. Sanitizing is a second-order improvement on top of that, sold without the numbers that would let you evaluate it. When a manufacturer publishes output and exposure figures, we will rank them here.

Do ozone boot dryers actually kill odor bacteria?
Ozone is a genuine oxidizing disinfectant, so the mechanism is real. What is not published by the manufacturers we looked at is the ozone concentration and exposure time each unit achieves, which is what you would need to compare two of them or to judge whether either works in a boot.
Is UV light effective inside a boot?
UV-C works only on surfaces it can directly illuminate. A boot is full of shadowed geometry - under the footbed, inside seams, in the toe box - which is exactly where the bacteria live. That is a structural limitation rather than a product flaw.
Is ozone safe around boots?
Ozone is a respiratory irritant, so these units are designed to run on a timer in an unoccupied space. It also degrades many rubbers and elastomers over repeated exposure, which is worth weighing for boots with rubber outsoles and elastic panels.
Why do you not recommend a specific ozone boot dryer?
Because no manufacturer in the category publishes the ozone output or exposure figures that would let us compare units, and we do not print numbers we cannot source. The same rule keeps DryGuy dryers out of our running-cost table.
