Polish vs cream vs wax
Three products that live on the same shelf and do almost nothing in common. Only one of them affects how long the boots last.

Only one of these three affects how long your boots last, and it is the one that gets the least attention. Cream feeds the leather. Wax seals the surface. Polish colors it. If you are choosing one for a working boot, choose the cream.

Cream: the one that matters
Leather is a fiber structure held flexible by oils. Every wet-dry cycle removes some; so does salt, so does detergent, so does time. When enough are gone the fibers stop sliding past each other, the leather stiffens, and the flex point across the toe cracks. That crack is permanent - no product closes it.
Cream is what prevents that. It is the only one of these three doing preventive work on the material itself, which is why it is the one worth being consistent about. Lexol publishes every 6 months for ongoing care; in a salted winter, monthly is more realistic.

Wax: protection, at a cost
A beeswax dressing physically fills the leather surface, which makes it the strongest water barrier available for smooth leather - and it does put oils back in as well. Atsko describes Sno-Seal as a natural wax that lubricates the leather and protects against drying, and that second half is real.
The costs are real too: it darkens the leather permanently, and it reduces breathability by design. Fine on a winter work boot, wrong on a summer hiker, and wrong on anything with a waterproof membrane. Heavier still is a pine-tar and beeswax grease such as Huberd’s, which has been made since 1921 and is the right kind of excessive for boots that are wet more days than they are dry.
One rule with any wax: warm the leather, never heat it. Atsko publishes a ceiling of a comfortable handling temperature of 120 F.
Polish: honest about what it is
Polish adds pigment and shine. It hides scuffs, restores color to worn edges and makes a dress boot look like a dress boot. Those are legitimate things to want, and if you want a mirror shine there is no substitute.
What it does not do is feed the leather or keep water out in any meaningful way. A boot that is polished weekly and never conditioned is a boot that looks good while it dries out. Polish is a finish, not maintenance, and the mistake is confusing the two.
The order, if you use more than one
Clean, condition (cream), then wax or polish - never both wax and polish on the same boot, since they compete for the same surface. The absorbed product goes first and the surface product goes last, for the same reason you condition before you proof: anything that seals the surface stops the next thing getting in.
What we would actually do
On work boots: condition regularly, wax before the wet season, skip polish entirely. On dress boots: condition regularly, polish when they need to look sharp, skip wax unless they are going out in the rain. In both cases the conditioning is the constant, and it is the part with permanent consequences if it is skipped.
