PEET Original boot dryer review

We have not tested it and we say so. What we have done is read every figure PEET publishes, compute what it costs to run, and be specific about the three jobs it cannot do.

The short version: buy it if you want one pair of boots dry by morning, every night, for the next twenty-five years, and you do not care that it takes all night to do it. That is what the PEET Original is, and the published figures back all three parts of that sentence.

What follows is not a test. We do not own one, there is no lab, and a review that claimed otherwise would be the easiest thing on this page for a competitor to disprove. What we did instead was read every specification PEET publishes for it, compute the running cost from the maker’s own wattage figure, and say plainly where it falls down. The method is in how we research.

Every row is from PEET’s own product page and its published FAQ. Where PEET publishes nothing - air temperature at the top of the tube, or moisture removed per hour - this review says so rather than filling the gap.

How it works, and why that matters more than it sounds

There is no fan. A 36-watt element warms the air at the base, warm air rises because it is less dense than the air above it, and that slow upward current carries moisture out through the top of the boot. That is the entire mechanism.

Three consequences follow, and they are the whole review:

  • It is silent. No moving parts means no noise at all, so it can stand in a hallway or a bedroom. Every forced-air dryer in this category has a fan you can hear from the next room.
  • It cannot cook a boot. Thirty-six watts spread over a 22-inch column is very gentle heat. That matters because the damage in this category comes from heat - Atsko states plainly that force drying with heat causes leather to harden and shrink, and Blundstone tells you never to dry boots by an artificial heat source. A convection dryer has no setting you can get wrong.
  • Nothing wears out. A heating element and a plastic tube is most of the parts list, which is why PEET is willing to put twenty-five years behind it. That warranty is the single most useful number on the spec sheet.

Overnight is the design, not a compromise. If you need boots dry before dinner this is the wrong machine.

What it costs to run

This is where the Original stops being just another dryer. Thirty-six watts is 0.036 kW. Run for eight hours that is 0.288 kWh. At the EIA published US average residential rate of 18.34 cents per kilowatt-hour, a night costs 5.3 cents.

Run it every night for a ninety-night wet season and the arithmetic is 25.92 kWh multiplied by $0.1834, which is $4.75. For the whole season. That is less than a single pair of replacement insoles, and it is the number that should decide whether you buy a dryer at all - it certainly is not the electricity.

If your rate is not the national average - and in New England, California or Hawaii it will not be - put your own number into the running-cost calculator. Even at triple the national rate this is under fifteen dollars a season.

The twenty-five-year warranty has a catch, and it is a short one

PEET publishes the warranty as twenty-five years with registration required within ten days of purchase. Ten days. It is the longest warranty in the category and the easiest one to lose, and nobody remembers on day eleven. Register it the evening it arrives.

Three things it does not do

A review that only lists strengths is a product page. Here is where the Original is the wrong purchase.

It will not get boots dry before you go out this evening. PEET’s own figure is four to eight hours, or overnight. If your boots come off at six and go back on at nine, you need a forced-air unit with a published drying time of one to four hours - the trade-offs are laid out in forced air vs convection. Buying the Original and being disappointed that it is slow is buying the wrong machine, not buying a bad one.

It does one pair. Two ports, one pair of boots. A household drying two pairs a night wants the four-port Multi, which runs 72 watts and costs $9.51 a season for two pairs - the same $4.75 per pair, so there is no efficiency penalty, just a bigger box.

Twenty-two inches reaches a work boot, not a knee boot. This is the specification that can make a dryer useless rather than merely slow. If your boots are knee height, rubber barn boots or waders, the air never reaches the footbed and you want the 42.5-inch Wader instead. The XL Tall question

There is a second model that is the same dryer with another two and a half inches of tube: 36 watts, 0.3 amps, the same twenty-five-year warranty, 24.5 inches instead of 22. It costs a little more and it is the difference between drying a taller work boot and drying its ankle.

It does not dry faster. Same element, same wattage, same published window. You are buying reach and nothing else, and if your boots are eight inches or shorter you would be paying for tube you never use.

How it compares to the obvious alternative

The nearest competitor at this size is DryGuy’s silent-heat two-port stand. It is usually cheaper and it is a perfectly reasonable object. The difference that decides it for us is documentation: DryGuy publishes no wattage for it, so nobody can tell you what it costs to run or whether it will trip a marginal circuit, and the product page states no warranty at all against PEET’s twenty-five years.

That is not a claim that the DryGuy is worse at drying boots. It is a claim that you cannot check, and on a device you plan to leave running unattended every night for a decade, being able to check matters. The fuller comparison is in PEET vs DryGuy.

What it is like to live with

Three things about owning one that do not show up on a spec sheet and are worth knowing before you buy.

It has no switch on most units. It is designed to be plugged in and left, which is why PEET talks about overnight use rather than cycles. If you want it off, you unplug it - and at 36 watts, leaving it on costs about a dollar a month even if you forget.

It is warm, not hot. People frequently expect a boot dryer to feel like a hairdryer and conclude theirs is broken. The tubes on a convection unit are gently warm to the hand. That is the design working, not failing - moving warm air slowly through a boot for eight hours removes more water than blasting it for twenty minutes, and does none of the damage.

It needs the boot loosened. A laced-up boot pushed onto the tube traps the moist air inside. Unlace fully, fold the tongue back, pull the insole out and stand it beside the boot. Skipping that is the single most common reason somebody decides a dryer does not work.

Where it sits against the rest of the range

PEET sells six models and five of them run the same 36-watt element. The Original is the short one at 22 inches; the XL Tall is the same dryer at 24.5 inches; the Wader is the same dryer again at 42.5 inches. The Multi doubles the element to serve four ports, and the Advantage Plus is a different product entirely with a fan and a heat setting.

That matters for this review because it means almost every complaint about the Original is actually a complaint about buying the wrong model. Who should buy it

One pair of boots, worn most days, that need to be dry by morning. A household that wants the thing to be silent. Anyone who would rather buy one appliance once than replace a cheap one every third winter. And anyone with leather boots who does not trust themselves not to use a heat setting - because there is no heat setting to misuse.

Who should not: anyone needing same-evening turnaround, anyone drying more than one pair, and anyone whose boots are taller than 22 inches. All three have a better answer inside the same brand, which is the unusual thing about this range.
