Forced air vs convection boot dryers
The received wisdom is that convection is the cheap option and forced air is the expensive one. We did the arithmetic, and that turns out to be wrong.

Choose convection if the boots are leather and you dry them overnight. Choose forced air if you need them in two hours. Running cost is not the deciding factor, and the reason is a piece of arithmetic almost nobody does.
The cost claim, tested
The standard line is that a 36-watt convection dryer is cheap to run and a 220-watt forced-air dryer is expensive. Compare them per unit of time and that is true. Compare them per drying job, which is what you actually pay for, and it inverts.

The gap across an entire wet season is $2.51. That is the whole running-cost argument, and it is not an argument. Anyone telling you to buy convection to save on electricity is quoting a wattage figure without multiplying it by hours.
Run this with your own electricity rate - if you are in the Northeast, where rates run well above the national average, both numbers roughly scale together and the conclusion does not change.
What actually separates them
Noise
Convection dryers have no moving parts. They make no sound at all, which means they can live in a bedroom or a hallway. A forced-air dryer has a fan, and a fan running for two hours in a small apartment is a real consideration that the spec sheet will never tell you about.
Speed
Published: 1 to 4 hours against 4 to 8. If your boots come off at 8 pm and go back on at 6 am, either works. If they come off at 5 pm and you are going out at 7, only one does.
Leather
This is the one that matters long-term. Atsko’s guidance: “Force drying - especially with heat - will cause leather to harden and shrink. In a few cycles, the boots are trashed.” A 105 °F capped dryer is not a radiator, and the sentence is about heat drying generally rather than boot dryers specifically - but the direction of risk is clear, and it is why every good forced-air dryer publishes a no-heat mode. The PEET Advantage Plus lists 0.33 amps in no-heat, against 1.833 with heat.
Durability
No fan is no fan to fail. PEET’s 25-year warranty on convection models against 5 on the fan-assisted one is the manufacturer’s own read on that.
The answer most people should hear
Buy convection, and buy a fan you already own for the emergencies. Eight hours of silent 36-watt airflow covers 95% of wet boots, and the 5% of nights you need them fast are covered by unlacing them and pointing a box fan at the throats.
The hybrid case
If you own ski boots as well as leather boots, forced air is the better single purchase - a sealed plastic shell defeats convection entirely, because convection depends on warm air escaping upward and a ski shell is built to stop that. Use the no-heat setting on the leather boots and the heat setting on the liners.

Per hour, yes. Per drying job, barely: a 220 W unit on its published 2-hour cycle uses 0.44 kWh against 0.288 kWh for a 36 W convection dryer left on 8 hours. That is 8.1 cents against 5.3 cents, or $2.51 difference across a 90-night season.
Are convection boot dryers better for leather?
They are the lower-risk option, because there is no heat setting to get wrong. Atsko warns that force drying with heat hardens and shrinks leather. A forced-air dryer used on its no-heat mode is a reasonable middle ground.
How much faster is a forced-air boot dryer?
Published figures put it at roughly two to four times faster: 1 to 2 hours (DryGuy) or 1 to 4 hours (PEET Advantage Plus), against 4 to 8 hours or overnight for non-fan models.
Do convection boot dryers actually work?
Yes, given time. They warm the air inside the boot so it rises and carries moisture out. That mechanism needs the air to escape, which is why they work well on leather boots and poorly on a sealed ski shell.
