Which PEET dryer should you buy?

Five of the six run the same 36-watt element. That single fact collapses most of this decision: you are buying height and ports, not drying power.

The Original, the XL Tall and the Wader are the same dryer at three heights. All three publish 36 watts and 0.3 amps at 120 volts on PEET’s own specification pages, and all three carry the same twenty-five-year warranty. They differ by 22, 24.5 and 42.5 inches of tube. If you know how tall your boots are, you have already made two-thirds of this decision.

The other three models are genuinely different products: the Multi doubles the element to run four ports, the Advantage Plus adds a fan and heat, and the Power Cell is a 12-watt travel unit. Those are the three that need thinking about.

Step one: how tall are your boots?

This is the only question that can make a dryer useless rather than merely slow. Convection works because warmed air rises through the tube and out of the boot. A tube that stops at the ankle of a 16-inch boot leaves the top half in still air, and the top half is where the sweat is.

  • Ankle boots, hikers, most 6-inch work boots. The Original at 22 inches overall is more reach than you need.
  • Tall work boots, logger boots, 10-inch pull-ons. The XL Tall buys 2.5 inches for very little money, and it is the difference between drying a boot and drying its ankle.
  • Knee boots, rubber barn boots, hip waders. The Wader, at 42.5 inches, is the only published reach in the range that gets to the top.

Note what this list does not say: none of these dry faster than the others. Same element, same 36 watts, same published four-to-eight-hour window in PEET’s FAQ. You are buying vertical reach.

What the 36-watt element is actually doing

Convection drying has no fan and no moving parts. The element warms the air at the base of the tube, warm air rises because it is less dense than the air above it, and that slow upward current carries moisture out of the boot. There is nothing to wear out, which is the reason PEET is willing to put twenty-five years behind it.

It also explains why the Original, the XL Tall and the Wader dry at the same rate despite being three different heights. The element is the same, so the energy going into evaporating water is the same. A taller tube does not dry faster - it delivers that same air further up the boot, which is a question of reach rather than power. Anybody telling you the Wader is a more powerful dryer has not read the specification.

The trade against a fan is real and it runs both ways. Convection is silent enough to live in a bedroom and it cannot overheat a boot, but it is an overnight process. A fan moves far more air per minute and finishes in a fraction of the time, at the cost of noise, a shorter warranty and a heat setting you have to be disciplined about. Step two: how many pairs a night?

The Multi runs four ports on 72 watts. That is exactly double the Original for exactly double the capacity, which is worth being clear about: there is no efficiency gain per pair. Two pairs on a Multi cost the same to run as two Originals, at 10.6 cents a night against 5.3 cents each. What you save is an outlet, a footprint and one purchase.

It is 13.25 inches wide and five pounds, so it wants real shelf space rather than a corner. If you are drying one pair a night, it is the wrong buy - you would be paying for ports you never fill and running double the wattage to do it.

Step three: do you need them dry this evening?

This is where the range splits properly. Everything above is convection: silent, no moving parts, and PEET’s own FAQ puts it at four to eight hours or overnight. The Advantage Plus is a fan-and-heat unit with a published drying time of one to four hours.

The trade is written into the specs. Heat mode draws 220 watts - 1.833 amps at 120 volts - which is roughly six times the Original. The warranty drops from twenty-five years to five. And it has a fan, so it is not a bedroom appliance.

There is one detail on the Advantage worth more than the speed claim: PEET publishes a no-heat mode at 0.33 amps. On leather, that is the setting to use nightly. Atsko is unambiguous that force drying with heat hardens and shrinks leather, and Blundstone says never to dry boots by an artificial heat source. Buying the fast unit and running the heat every night on leather boots is how people damage boots while believing they are looking after them. Use the heat when you genuinely need a two-hour turnaround; use no-heat the rest of the time. The broader argument is in forced air vs convection.

The warranty gap is the clearest signal in the range

Twenty-five years on every convection model, five years on the two that have either a fan or a compact form factor. PEET is not hiding that. A dryer with no moving parts is a heating element and a plastic tube, and the company prices its confidence accordingly. If you want the thing that is still working in 2050, it is a convection model - and you register it within ten days, which is a condition PEET publishes and most buyers miss.

Step four: do you travel with boots?

The Power Cell is a different job entirely. Twelve watts, one pound, 1.75 by 2 by 7 inches - it packs inside the boot it dries. Its ceiling is damp boots, not soaked ones, and PEET’s five-year warranty rather than twenty-five is a reasonable reflection of that. What each one costs across a season

Ninety nights, eight hours a night, at the EIA average residential rate of 18.34 cents per kilowatt-hour:

  • Power Cell, 12 W: 0.096 kWh a night, $1.58 a season.
  • Original, XL Tall, Wader, all 36 W: 0.288 kWh a night, $4.75 a season.
  • Multi, 72 W: 0.576 kWh a night, $9.51 a season - $4.75 per pair, identical to running one Original.
  • Advantage Plus, 220 W with heat: 8.1 cents for a two-hour cycle, $7.26 across ninety cycles; 32 cents if you leave it on all night.

The whole range costs less to run for a season than a couple of coffees. Which is the real conclusion: do not choose a PEET on running cost. Choose it on height, then ports, then whether you need speed - and check your own electricity rate in the running-cost calculator if you want the figure for your house rather than the national average.

Two things to do on the day it arrives

First, register it. PEET’s twenty-five-year warranty on the convection models carries a published condition: registration within ten days. It is the longest warranty in the category and the easiest one to forfeit, and nobody remembers on day eleven.

Second, decide where it lives before you use it. A dryer that has to be fetched from a cupboard gets used for a fortnight and then stops. The whole value of a 36-watt convection unit is that it is cheap enough to leave running every night all winter, and that only happens if it is standing where the boots come off.

What PEET does not publish

Three things, and they are worth knowing before you buy on specifications alone.

  • A temperature figure for the convection models. PEET publishes wattage and drying time but not the air temperature at the top of the tube. In practice a 36-watt element spread over a 22-inch column is very gentle, and the twenty-five-year warranty on leather-adjacent use is a reasonable proxy - but it is a proxy, not a published number.
  • A capacity figure in liters or ounces of water. No manufacturer in this category publishes how much moisture a unit removes per hour, which is why every comparison, including ours, ends up reasoning from wattage instead.
  • Port dimensions. PEET publishes overall height, which is what matters for reach, but not the diameter of the tubes. If you own something unusually narrow - a slim dress boot - that is worth checking against the return policy rather than the spec sheet.

None of these are reasons not to buy. They are the reasons this page ranks on height, ports and speed rather than on a drying-performance number that does not exist in published form anywhere in the category.

What is the difference between the PEET Original and the XL Tall?

Height, and nothing else that PEET publishes. Both are 36 watts, 0.3 amps and carry the twenty-five-year warranty. The Original is 22 inches overall and the XL Tall is 24.5 inches, which is the margin that reaches the top of a taller work boot.

Is the PEET Advantage worth it over the Original?

Only if you need boots dry the same evening. PEET publishes one to four hours for the Advantage Plus against four to eight for the convection models, but it draws 220 watts with heat instead of 36, carries a five-year warranty instead of twenty-five, and has a fan. On leather, use its published no-heat mode.

Do all PEET dryers use the same wattage?
