Buy a forced-air dryer for ski boots, and pull the liner out of the shell before you use it. A ski boot shell is deliberately waterproof, which means the moisture your foot puts into the liner has nowhere to go. Convection - warm air rising gently through a boot - relies on that air escaping, and a plastic shell is the one piece of footwear designed to stop it.
Why ski boots break the usual advice
Everywhere else on this site the recommendation leans toward gentle convection and away from fans, because the material at risk is leather. A ski boot has almost no leather in it. What it has is:
- A sealed plastic shell that will not pass water vapor at all.
- A thick foam liner that absorbs a remarkable volume of sweat over a day and holds it against the foam cells.
- A single overnight window between one day on the hill and the next, with no possibility of a rest day.
That combination wants moving air and a defined cycle, which is exactly what a forced-air dryer publishes: DryGuy states most garments dry in 1 to 2 hours on the Force Dry range, with a 3-hour timer and a temperature cap of 105 °F. PEET publishes 1 to 4 hours for the Advantage Plus.
The temperature cap matters more here, not less
Ski boot liners are heat-moldable, and several are custom-fitted to your foot by a bootfitter with a heat gun. That fit is a thermal state you paid for. A dryer that caps at a published 105 °F is nowhere near remolding temperature and is safe; a hairdryer, a hotel radiator or a car heater vent are none of those things and can genuinely alter a molded liner.
This is one of the few places where the published temperature figure on a dryer’s spec page is a buying criterion rather than trivia.
Take the liner out. Every time.
Almost every ski boot liner is removable, and drying it inside the shell is drying a sponge inside a sealed bag. Out of the shell, on a dryer port, it dries in a fraction of the time - and the shell, which holds almost no water, dries on its own.
Capacity, because ski gear comes in sets
Boots, gloves and a helmet liner all come off wet at the same time. The four-port units - the DryGuy Force Dry DX and the PEET Advantage Plus and Multi - handle a boot pair plus gloves in one cycle. A two-port unit means two cycles, which on a 1-to-2-hour published cycle time is a whole evening.
What it costs on a trip
Almost nothing, which is worth saying because rental-condo electricity is one of the things people worry about unnecessarily. The PEET Advantage Plus at a published 220 watts, run two hours a night for a seven-night trip, uses 3.08 kWh - about 56 cents for the week at the EIA average rate. The full arithmetic is here.
If the liners have started to smell rather than just being wet, the drying is still the fix - a deodorizer is what you add afterwards, not instead.
