This is a much narrower argument than Nikwax vs Sno-Seal, because these two products are the same idea. Both are water-based. Both are fluorochemical-free. Both publish directions that tell you to apply them to a boot that is still damp from cleaning, which removes the drying wait that most people skip anyway. If you bought either one by accident you would be fine.

So the honest comparison is about the three things that actually differ: how much you get, what the maker clears it for, and how the excess comes off. Get those right and the decision takes a minute.

Every row above comes from Nikwax’s published directions and the Grangers product page. Neither company publishes a coverage figure in pairs, and neither publishes a reapplication interval, so this page does not invent either.

The one difference that decides it: material coverage

Nikwax sells its footwear proofers as a matched pair. Nubuck & Suede Proof is formulated for napped leathers. Fabric & Leather Proof is the sibling for smooth leather and mixed leather-and-textile boots. Buy the wrong one of the two and you have bought a product that is not intended for your boots.

Grangers takes the other approach and clears Footwear Repel Plus for suede, nubuck, leather, fabric and membrane boots from one bottle. If your rack has a suede chukka, a fabric hiker and a smooth-leather work boot on it, that is one purchase instead of two.

The trade is the one every general-purpose product makes, and it is on the product card as an honest con: wide material coverage means it is nobody’s specialist. Both products are doing the same job by the same mechanism. Beading is not the test - how long it keeps beading is, and neither maker publishes that.

Volume: 125 ml against 275 ml

More than double, and it matters more than it sounds. A spray proofer wastes a real fraction of every application on the sole, the welt and the air, which is why a 125 ml bottle covers fewer pairs than the number on the label suggests.

If you own one pair of suede boots and re-proof them twice a season, the Nikwax bottle is right-sized and the Grangers bottle will be sitting in the cupboard separating in two years. If you are treating a household’s worth of footwear each autumn, the arithmetic flips completely. Both of them need the boots cleaned first

This is the step that decides whether either product works, and it is the step almost everyone skips. Both makers say the boot must be clean before the proofer goes on - Grangers specifies “freshly-cleaned” and Nikwax specifies “clean, wet”. Apply on damp, which is the opposite of what people assume

Both makers publish it and both get ignored. Nikwax says clean and wet; Grangers says freshly-cleaned and damp. The reason is that a water-based treatment needs the fiber surfaces wetted out to distribute evenly - on a bone-dry boot it sits on the outer surface and dries in patches. It also means the whole job happens the moment the boots come off your feet, instead of waiting a day for them to dry and then never doing it.

What “water-based” actually means here

Both products are sold on the phrase and it is worth unpacking, because it describes a genuinely different mechanism from a wax. Nikwax publishes the clearest description of it: elastic water-repellent molecules coat the fibers and leave the spaces between them open.

That is the whole design. A wax fills the spaces and seals the surface, which is why a waxed boot is more waterproof and less breathable. A water-based proofer coats each fiber and leaves the gaps, so water beads off the outside while vapor from your foot can still get out. On a membrane-lined hiking boot that is not a nice-to-have - sealing the outer with wax defeats the membrane you paid for.

Two practical consequences follow. Neither product needs heat to activate, which Nikwax states explicitly and which removes the whole preheating ritual that wax dressings require. And neither builds a visible film, so you cannot judge coverage by eye - the only feedback you get is whether water beads afterwards.

The smooth-leather sibling nobody mentions

Half the people comparing these two products are looking at the wrong Nikwax bottle. Nubuck & Suede Proof is the napped-leather product. For smooth leather, or for the mixed leather-and-mesh construction that most modern hiking boots use, the sibling is Fabric & Leather Proof - same water-based chemistry, same no-heat application, different formulation.

That changes the comparison materially. Against Grangers, which covers everything from one bottle, Nikwax is really offering a two-product system for a household with mixed footwear. If you own one pair, that is a benefit: you get a formulation aimed at your material. If you own five pairs in three materials, you are looking at two Nikwax bottles against one Grangers bottle, and the Grangers arithmetic starts winning quickly.

The four ways people make either one fail

Neither of these is a difficult product to use, and yet both get returned as “did not work” constantly. In our reading of the two makers’ own directions, there are four ways to get there.

  1. Applying it to a dirty boot. Both makers specify clean footwear. A proofer over road grime bonds to the grime and leaves with it.
  2. Applying it to a bone-dry boot. Both specify damp or wet. On dry material a water-based treatment sits on the outer surface and dries in patches instead of distributing through the fibers.
  3. Leaving the excess on. Nikwax gives a two-minute window before removing the surplus; Grangers says to remove it with a clean cloth. Surplus that dries in place looks like a patchy stain and does nothing useful.
  4. Judging it on day one. Fresh beading proves the product went on. It says nothing about how long it lasts, which is the number neither maker publishes and the reason we do not either.

Neither publishes the number you most want

How long it lasts. Not one of the footwear proofers on this site publishes a reapplication interval, and these two are no exception - Nikwax and Grangers both document how to apply the product in some detail and then stop short of saying when to do it again.

That absence is worth naming rather than filling. Any figure you have read for spray-on footwear proofing came from a publisher, not a manufacturer, and it was made up. The honest substitute is a test rather than a number: drop water on the flex crease and the welt, and if it soaks in instead of beading, redo it. Those two places fail first, and they fail long before the toe does.

Where neither of them is the right answer

Water-based sprays coat the fibers and leave the gaps between them open, which is what keeps a membrane boot breathing. That is a feature on a hiker and a limitation on a boot that lives in standing mud. Neither of these builds the sealed wax film that a smooth-leather work boot in constant wet actually wants.

On the fluorochemical question

Both makers publish a position: Nikwax states it is PFAS-free and has never used them, and Grangers publishes Footwear Repel Plus as PFC-free. We are not in a position to verify either claim independently and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What we can say is that both companies commit to it in writing on their own product pages, which is more than most of this category does, and that neither performance claim on this page depends on it.

How to choose, in one paragraph

Can you use Grangers on suede boots?
